#95 Matheus Lutes

Many Jiu Jitsu practitioners dream of opening their own academy but most don't achieve that goal. As a Purple belt with a new wife and baby on the way, Matheus Lutes had that dream. However, he knew that in order for it to come true and for him to support his family with Jiu Jitsu every decision he made had to be a calculated step in that direction. Matheus geared where and how he trained to push him closer to his dream. He also put added pressure on himself knowing that every win put him closer to his dream and every loss was a potential setback. Matheus had no doubt he would make his dream a reality because he had no backup plan. Failure was not an option.

Matheus also knew that his Jiu Jitsu alone would not make him a successful academy owner. He studied what made the academies he visited successful, from the way classes were instructed to how clean they were. Every positive aspect of an academy was tucked into his memory so that when he opened his own school no detail would be missed. He had a vision for what his academy would look like, the culture it would create, and the community it would build. Now just a few years after deciding to make his dream come true Matheus is the co-owner and head instructor of Royal Jiu Jitsu in New York.

This is a pretty impressive feat considering that Matheus got his start in Jiu Jitsu in a church basement, on puzzle mats, taught by a Brown Belt who happened to also be the church's pastor. Several years later Matheus was living in Portugal and found himself training with the Miyao brothers who stayed with him while visiting Portugal. After their visit, Matheus was invited to move to the United States to train at Unity Jiu Jitsu. Matheus, with the help of a sponsor, was able to make the move and began training in NYC. After training at Unity for a period Matheus switched gyms and began training at Marcelo Garcia's gym. This proved to be a very fruitful decision and Matheus was awarded the rank of Black Belt by Marcelo in 2019. Along the way, Matheus absorbed everything he could about running a successful academy and opened the doors of Royal Jiu Jitsu as a Marcelo Garcia affiliate.

Matheus is a 5x World Champion and 7x Pan American Champion. He has won countless tournaments all with the singular focus of making his dreams come true. He is now setting new goals for himself and has the same determination to achieve them that has seen him become the businessman and family man he set out to be.
